A Chinese woman infected with H7N9 bird flu gave birth to a girl in the country's eastern Jiangsu Province, becoming the world's first woman to deliver a healthy child while suffering from the deadly virus.
25-year-old Qiu was five months pregnant when she was diagnosed with H7N9 virus in April.
Qiu underwent a cesarean delivery and gave birth to a healthy girl weighing 3.3 kg yesterday in a hospital in Zhenjiang City in Jiangsu Province, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today quoting doctors of the hospital.
They said Qiu's cardiopulmonary function still needs time for recovery. The hospital will continue to monitor the health of the mother and baby.
The avian influenza virus mainly originating from birds including chickens created a major scare in China as it was discovered for the first time in the world.
A total of 132 H7N9 avian flu cases have been reported in China this year of which 43 people died.
The spread of the disease has been brought under control, as there was only one new case reported in Jiangsu Province last month and the patient has recovered, according to the commission's updates.
