Bauchi to re-train 2,250 teachers

The Bauchi State Universal Education Board (SUBEB) said it would re-train 2,250 teachers in the 20 Local Government Areas of the state to improve the quality of their teaching.

The Acting Chairman of the board, Alhaji Isa Narabi, made the announcement in Bauchi on Friday at the commencement of the re-training programme.

Narabi said the training would be captured under the Cluster Schools Teacher Professional Development Program (TPDP) of the board.

He said that 45 clusters were designated across the state for the training, adding that there were plans to turn the centres into inspectorate units.

“We have plans to turn these 45 clusters into inspectorate so that we can monitor the quality of the teachers with a viewing to providing the quality of that aspect of educational services,’’ he said.

Earlier, the North East Zonal Coordinator of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Alhaji Hassan Umar, said that the cluster approach was adopted by the Federal Government for better results in building teachers’ capacity.

“The cluster approach is a new approach to replace the former one which is more of a lecture, this time around one teacher will teach his colleague and it is more interactive.”
He advised that each cluster should have 45 to 50 participants during the training with experts to supervise the training.

Also speaking, the Training Coordinator, Alhaji Gimba Babaji, said that each cluster comprised 10 schools and 50 participants

“In each cluster, there will be five officers that comprise two mentors, two local government officers who will serve as supervisors and one SUBEB officer as the monitor.

“Before a centre is selected to be a cluster, there must be adequate security, furnished classes, computer sets, water supply, good toilet facilities, among others,’’ he said.

Also speaking on behalf the participants, Malam Ibrahim Illiya, commended the initiative, promising that participants would make use of what they would learn.
