Environment Minister Ville Niinistö has paid nearly 5,000 euros in car tax after he borrowed his partner’s Sweden-registered car over the summer holiday. He says he believes the case highlights the need to re-consider taxation rules.
The Green party leader has been forced to pay 4,844 euros in car tax after driving his spouse’s car in Finland during his holidays. He told of the matter on his Facebook page, and said the car usage was minimal.
The minister said he was completely unaware that borrowing his own partner’s car could be taxable, if the spouse herself was not present.
In Niinistö’s opinion there is cause to ponder whether car taxation has taken enough account of different family situations, including families who live in border areas such as the north-west of Finland, and free movement within the Nordic countries and the Euorpean Union.
