Looking back to my days growing up to be a man, it brings memory of how  a lot of times I lived my days based on people’s comment and opinion about me, my look and my reactions towards things, at times, things people say makes me feel good and sometimes it makes me feel down. For a long time, I have pictured myself as a ship in the middle of the ocean tossed here and there by the storm but often, i have heard a soft voice from within saying if you must get to the shore, captain your ship well.

Transformation in me began when I began talking to myself more; I learnt to bless myself always and rebuke myself for any mistake I made before anyone points it to me and ever prepared to make amendment. I have always promised myself to never break down whenever I am a victim of a situation or fail to celebrate my victory, because they are gifts of life to make my story to be unique and significant.

My mother happened to be a great teacher life presented to me which I didn’t quickly recognize, may her soul rest in perfect peace. Being the last child and the only child that was living with her after my elder ones had started living alone; as a teenager and until the last day I saw her, many times she had called me late at night, early in the morning and may i say every single chance she had to talk to me, she tells of her life experiences, how she had sailed through terrible storms and managed up the hill. Her teachings made me to be brave towards life but often then, I feel bored of her stories because I prefer to stick to milk for babies like me instead of her strong food for those who are already prepared to take the bull by the horn in life, which she was already always dishing to me.

As I grew older and started having strong challenges, great encounters in life and began to unravel the mystery of life, her teachings became clearer and had been a great guide for me in life. She had often say ‘a child may have new clothes more than an adult but would never have as much rag as the adult’ which I will put in my own way that ‘the wisdom in age is a luxury especially for those who live indeed’, it is always good to learn from those who were here before us and have lived well.

A lot of happenings in the lives of people around the world which we hear through the media are worth picking a message from and does help to choose to live a meaningful life. Many of these stories inspires, heal ones heart and help one gain the strength to keep going, keep trying and never give up until the struggle is over.

I came across the news of a man (a Detroiter), James Robertson on daily mail, who walks 21 miles to work and back every day no matter the weather. He has been doing this for ten years after his car got broken before the universe decides to compensate him for his undying and ever-going spirit. The amazing thing about the man is that he is 56, never get late to work because his boss also said they set the attendance standard of the factory by the man, he travels for almost half of the day to and from home and work place which walking takes the huge part of his travel, works for 8 hours, have less than four hours to sleep daily on working days and his wage is not worth the stress. Three statements from this amazing man thrill me, lessons from it are really important to be applied in every one’s life to be really fulfilled in life.

The first statement is ‘I sleep a lot on weekend, yes I do, but I can’t imagine not working.’

Life requires that you work, do with all of your might all that your hands find doing when your sun is still shinning because soon or later your sun will set. You have got to keep trying and doing, nothing works more than trying and doing, whoever does not buy into this, achieve only nothing. As it is easy for anyone to keep away from trying and doing, so is the way failure, shame and curses clouds such one. Trying and doing maybe so tough and challenging for anyone but success, glory and blessings dominates such life and decorates such one. Working is living, the moment you stop trying and doing, you stop to live.

As we live, there comes times in our lives when the sun goes down on us, we feel lost and confused but suddenly the stars comes out and start to shine on us, which is a reminder of hope that better days are yet to come and the sun will shine so bright on us that we glow and grin.

One thing I have learnt about life is that it is indeed beautiful and amazing, and not ugly and terrible as it poses itself to be at times, but only those who strive to live above their hurdles and see beyond their struggles can experience it.

I have lived many of my days in tears, often i have been broken in spirit and wallow in fear, and there are times when I feel my dreams and visions are clouded but whenever i lift up my head to see above my adversities and reach for help from above from God who is above all things, miracles begin to happen.

In times of crisis, my help often comes when I remember to say lift up your head o ye mighty gates (my trouble, my pains, my adversity and my challenges) and let the king of glory (Almighty God) come in, and all i begin to see is solution to my trauma.

There are days which you wish never came, the days when you feel the sun didn’t come to shine on you but came to crack and burn you. Now the day is over and you prefer the darkness of the night, you want to remain in it to hide your shame, sorrow and pain. Sometimes, you just want to pass away with the night because of the fear of tomorrow but one thing stand still; even though sorrow fades the whole night, there will be joy in the morning for those that believe.

When I was in my junior high school, i learnt a lesson through an unpleasant situation that changed the way I reason and also forced out the love for writing in me. As a teenager who wants to feel among my peer group by doing what they also do, i tried to talk with a girl about how much I liked her and would want her to be my girlfriend, what happened next was beyond my expectation; she went directly to the principal of our school to report me and I was called to be questioned, when it was confirmed from me that the story was true, the principal talked to me and punished me. My punishment then was to buy a particular type of notebook and write on the entire columns and pages ‘I will never do this again’ with three pens of different colors which are (Red, Blue and Green) for a period of one week. I wrote this, day and night so I could meet up with the deadline, my fingers ached so badly and i missed playtime and other things just to fulfill the punishment. When I finished the writings and went to submit the notebook of my ‘I will never do this again’, the principal sat me down and said to me ‘Clem, I believe in you and I gave you this type of punishment so that you can learn to use your time for better things rather than going after unnecessary things at your age, I hope you have learnt your lessons’. After the meeting with him, I developed the love for writing my own stories because I was a fan of reading story books and novels, and I also tried to draw and paint the characters in my stories with my pen which I had bought when I was given the punishment. Few months later I had written ten stories and other stories from three of my friends which one of them was the son of the proprietress of our school were added, compiled and submitted to the school, the proprietress was really glad and promised she may publish it and throughout my years in the school, she had made reference to the storybook I wrote with my friends when counseling other students. My experiences in life has made to see that on every blank page is a possibility of great writings, paintings and drawings, on every empty ground is a possibility of green pasture and on every empty mind is a chance of the spring of magnificent idea and beauty. When you feel empty, it’s a signal to fill it up.

Let’s quickly check out what the beginning of life on earth looks like, in reference to the first book of the Bible Genesis 1 (NIV) ‘1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ² Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters’. This clearly gives a clear picture of a kind of earth none of us would wish to visit not to even think of living in because of its formlessness, emptiness and darkness but God has proved to us and thought us to see beyond formlessness, darkness and emptiness through His magnificent creations which we are one of and given dominion over the rest because He designed us in his likeness and image which affirm we are small gods who carry the DNA of the omnipotent God to achieve endless possibilities.

No one is perfect, perfection is beyond human but you can always be better than you were, and this is the essence of your life to see beyond your flaws and reach for a newer, better, stronger, wiser, richer and greater you. This is evident in your need to bath, brush and clean your whole body every day, you don’t clean once and stay neat throughout your lifetime but you do this every day without worries because you want to stay fresh for yourself and not make people feel irritated by your mess. The obvious truth is that everyone sees taking care of their body everyday to be important without any special need to ponder on why they should do so, this same understanding can be applied to every area of your life, if you have the energy to take care of your body (simple as bathing every day), you have the power to overcome whatever thing that want to mess with your thought and your future. You and I have our flaws, disabilities and mistakes that stare us in the face but we can see beyond it, build strength from it and soar above the forces that could pin us down because in our flaws lies our uniqueness.

I have learnt great lessons from people who ordinarily may amount to nothing if they dwell on their flaws and disabilities, but they have emerged winners in life having flawless victory over the things that could crush them and make them useless. I will tell of two people whom I believe have been a blessing to the world and the things I learnt from them. These two guys are Cobhams Asuquo (a Nigerian musician, producer, and songwriter who was born blind) and Nick Vijucic (an Australian Christian evangelist and motivational speaker born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of all four limbs. These guys have achieved incredible things even though from the beginning of their life anyone could easily say they would amount to nothing, their life expresses ‘anything is possible’.

There are three lessons from Cobhams Asuquo which he said he learnt as a result of being blind. The first lesson is ‘Do not Excuse Failure, for any reason on any account’, he said failures will come but you should see to it that it goes. He stated that whenever there’s a larger than life seemingly insurmountable flaw, in a system, in our cities, in our leaders, even in our character, we tend to excuse the failure. We overlook it, we pardon it, and we indulge in it. We become comfortable with it and sometimes, we even find different terms for the failure. When a thing isn’t working the way it should, we shake our heads, and we automatically blame it on something (our flaws and our disabilities) and refuse to be accountable for situation of our lives. He added that when you excuse failure and blames it on your flaw or disability; you miss the opportunity to scale through those seemingly insurmountable obstacles. To elevate yourself and others, you must see beyond your flaw and disability, and be ready to the impossible.

The journey of life has granted every one of us the chance to evolve from nothing to something, from ordinary to extra-ordinary, and from a weakling to a person of valor and great strength. To spend a lifetime as a coward and stay obscure or be brave and stand tall is a choice; you and I are responsible for our woes or fortune.

Life is like a rock which you need to break through to get out the egg in it, that’s why life is not easy, it’s a bed of roses when we are determined and focused to pluck out the thorns around it, for every man that want to succeed must be ready to experience failures and stay strong through challenges and confrontations to come out strong as a winner.

Only those who fall now and then, but refuse to remain there but rise up again and reach for greater things achieve their dreams and vision. Only those who are broken at sunset but refuse to be crushed, get themselves together at sunrise comes out whole again to be the invincible. Only those who recognize their flaws, refuse to feed their weaknesses but make their strength robust day by day experience fullness and fulfillment in life.

As Life begins in the womb of mothers, for those who make it out after swimming in the blood and in the dark for months, only these ones sees the light of the world at birth when the second phase of life begins. Our journey in life begins immediately after birth when we have to learn the lessons of life, use these lessons to get out the best out life and pass this acquired wealth of knowledge and wisdom gained through a lifetime down to the next generation before and at death. As they say life is a teacher and we learn the lessons from the victims of the situations of life, the most important question is, are you able to move from victim to victor before time up? No matter the troubles and hurdles of life we encounter, keep fighting, keep going because greater and glorious things are yet to come, the problems of today are indeed stories tomorrow if decisively and bravely tackled.

The past is gone, and the now is here, but the future is about to come. The story of our life is not yet complete until we stop walking the sands of the earth, however when you go away, let your footprint on the sands of the earth bring the remembrance of that unique one who came, saw and conquered.

I like to remind you that you are not the only one here, no one is spared from the blows of life, every man has got a problem, don’t be envious of other people’s life, many are things you don’t understand. The rich and the poor cry, kings and servants also mourn, often weaklings are the ones who are believed to quit but the brave too have times they lose hope, all I am saying is, the life you have is the best you have got, make it as beautiful and wonderful as you can. To be fulfilled in life, you must dump the belief that your life is not good enough or you are not good enough, at every point of your life, remember you are just perfect for your situations.
